There are the friends with whom we set off on our journeys and fellow travelers we befriend along the way. There are guides with whom we build relationships and locals who we meet as strangers and leave as friends.

Africa is like no other place on Earth when it comes to the variety and majesty of its wildlife. The big five—lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants, rhinos—famously call Africa home, but so too do other large animals including one of our guests’ favourites, the cheetah. It’s well-known that cheetahs are the world’s fastest land-based animal; they can reach top speeds of 75 mph during sprints, and it only takes them three seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. But beyond their incredible speed, there is much to learn and love about cheetahs.

As a woman who regularly travels alone, I am not unique! Whether it is for business or pleasure, thousands of women travel solo every year. While all travelers should take precautions, women travelers are a distinct demographic in terms of their safety. Couples or groups have safety in numbers, while single women are easier targets than men for theft and harassment and are exposed to gender inequality prevalent in many countries.

But did you know that there are three species of zebra? Read on for more amazing facts about zebras, one of our favorite animals to see up close on safari.
Leopards are one of the most elusive creatures in the African animal kingdom. Their solitary nature and cool camouflage make them particularly difficult to spot on safari, which just makes it all the more thrilling to see these large cats in the wild! But there’s more to these mysterious animals than meets the eye, did you know that leopards can jump up to 9.8 feet vertically? Read on for more fantastic facts about one of my favorite African animals.

In 2017, our partners at Shamwari Game Reserve will be celebrating their 25th year “conserving a vanishing way of life”. Shamwari’s story is a remarkable one that shows the impact that travel can have on supporting wildlife sustainability in Africa. Since Shamwari opened, they have grown from a small reserve, to one encompassing 25,000 hectares of protected land. Conservation remains at the heart of everything we do at Lion World Travel, which is why we are excited to announce that we will be building a new rhino boma at Shamwari's Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre.
To celebrate this year’s International Women’s Day, we are highlighting The Travel Corporation’s (TTC) inspirational Lucille Sive, CEO of TTC’s Africa Division who is dedicated to female empowerment and promoting gender parity across the globe.
Recently, I had the pleasure of traveling to Cape Town with Sherwin Banda, president of African Travel, Inc. and a group of travelers. We spent 5 days in Cape Town and our trip was filled with wonderful events, performances and cuisine.
Here are a few of the highlights from my trip with images of our unforgettable experiences.
Cape Town is Africa’s culinary capital, home to cuisines from all over Africa and the world. For the traveler looking to taste their way through South Africa, there is no better place to start your trip than in Cape Town! The Mother City’s busy culinary scene means that new restaurants, bistros, and cafes open up all of the time, so it can be hard to keep up. That’s why I try to visit as many new culinary hotspots whenever I’m in Cape Town. Here are seven of my favorites from my most recent trip.
Celebrating 10 years of working to #MakeTravelMatter with our not-for-profit partner The TreadRight Foundation, TreadRight Ambassador Céline Cousteau and a group of influential storytellers recently joined us on a journey of exploration and discovery in awe-inspiring Jordan, where we visited the Iraq Al-Amir Women’s Cooperative outside of Amman.
In 2018, the readers of Travel + Leisure named Cape Town one of only 15 “World’s Best” cities. Thanks to the Mother City’s unique blend of natural beauty and captivating cultural attractions, it’s easy to see why the city remains at the top of many travelers’ bucket lists. Following an incredible recovery from a water shortage in 2018, in which residents and travelers alike rallied together to save water, Cape Town’s travel and tourism sector is “open for business”! Travelers looking to support sustainable tourism and sample some of Africa’s extraordinary experiences in 2019, should look no further than this astonishing city.

I could not be happier to share King’s story, and its wonderful conclusion, with you!
Wednesday, July 18th marks the 100th birthday of South Africa’s inspirational leader, Nelson Mandela. This milestone is the perfect time to reflect on Mandela’s incredible legacy of ending apartheid and creating positive change in the world. It's crucial that we take the time to be a part of Madiba's living legacy by giving back and lifting up our communities.

The summit asked challenging questions facing our travel industry today and how we can work together towards a more sustainable future.

Meerkats are one of Africa’s most well-known small mammals. Meerkats are sometimes hard to see on safari, but when you do, they always make for a fascinating sighting. Their fun social behaviour and iconic stance (resting on their hind legs to survey the terrain around them) is always a delight to behold. I invite you to learn more about marvelous meerkats on our blog!
Botswana’s Chobe National Park is one the premier safari destinations in Africa. Featuring one of the largest concentrations of wildlife on the continent, Chobe is an ideal destination for safari travelers eager to see Africa’s animals in abundance. Situated in the north east corner of Chobe National Park sits the Chobe Game Lodge, an elegant five-star retreat that’s also home to Botswana’s only all-women safari guiding team. One of the animals you absolutely cannot miss when you go on safari in East Africa is the wildebeest. These large, brown herbivores move in vast herds across the plains of Africa, always on the look out for food and water. But there’s more to these antelopes (yes, wildebeests are antelopes!) than meets the eye. We invite you to learn more about the wildebeest on our blog.

The hippopotamus is one of Africa's most iconic creatures and one of Earth's most enduring animals, with ancestors dating back over 155,000 years. There's more to these 'river horses' than meets the eye and we invite you to get to know the hippopotamus on our blog!
I have just returned from a fabulous two week trip to Cape Town and I have to say that if you can, you should come and enjoy this exceptionally beautiful city. I stayed at The Table Bay Hotel and the Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa during my trip. As you have probably seen, everyone is talking about the water shortage in Cape Town and both these hotels are clearly giving their guests peace of mind that every drop of water is being used responsibly. My experience was very positive and I felt very comfortable at both properties.
Visiting Africa is always a thrill: there’s the majestic wildlife safaris, exceptional accommodations, and, of course, the five-star service you receive from some of the friendliest people in the world. My most recent trip to Tanzania and Rwanda featured all of these aspects in abundance. From my luxury safari in Tanzania to my time trekking with the gorillas in Rwanda, I came home with unforgettable memories. Equally important to me is how Africa is embracing sustainability and social responsibility to build a better future. Here are three projects in East Africa that are taking sustainability and social responsibility seriously.
During my recent trip to Tanzania, I was fortunate to stay in some of the most luxurious lodges Africa has to offer. The great migration is synonymous with traveling to East Africa and many people think the only time to see animals is from July-August. My visit in November definitely proved otherwise. The Serengeti was teeming with animals and their adorable babies.
On my most recent trip to Africa, I realized one of my dreams: trekking with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. These gentle creatures are stunning to behold and I feel privileged to have seen them in their natural habitat. As an experienced African traveler, I am no stranger to the majesty of Africa: from the spectacular Victoria Falls to the extraordinary animals such as elephants, lions, leopards and more, Africa is truly a destination of wonders. Even those incredible experiences, however, did not prepare me for my time with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda, a magical experience I am delighted to share with you now.

After visiting Tanzania in 2015, South Africa shot to the top of my travel bucket list. I was so blown away by what I experienced in Tanzania that I knew I needed to see more of Africa. In particular, I wanted to visit Cape Town and experience what a safari would be like in the Southern region of the continent. In November, my dream became a reality: Erin, my new wife, and I packed our bags for our dream honeymoon to South Africa!

I had the opportunity to visit the beautiful Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape on my recent trip to South Africa. I was absolutely blown away by what I experienced there—the stunning landscapes, big game, 5-star service and luxurious accommodations all exceeded my expectations. But what really excited me about Shamwari was their commitment to wildlife preservation and conservation. They are an example of successful sustainable tourism that I found truly inspiring and I think you will too!
Lucille Sive in Conversation with Dr. Johan Joubert
Shamwari Game Reserve, situated in South Africa’s Eastern Cape region, is, home to incredible wildlife and magnificent landscapes, making it one of the top safari destinations in the country. But this rugged Eastern Cape reserve is also notable for its focus on wildlife conservation. On my latest trip to South Africa, I had the opportunity to learn more about Shamwari’s outstanding conservation work by speaking with Dr. Johan Joubert, a veterinarian by trade, who is in charge of wildlife at Shamwari.

It’s always a joy for me to return home to Cape Town. I love to catch up with friends and family, enjoy South Africa’s delectable food and wine and take in the always-thrilling sights of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront and Table Mountain. I have travelled to South Africa many times over the years and one of the things that I look forward to is the thriving Cape Town restaurant and gourmet scene. One could even say that the Cape is the gastronomic capital of Africa.

Tanzania should be placed high on your list of safari destinations to visit! It is rich in the incredible amount and diversity of wildlife roaming free in unspoiled game reserves. And of course that is why most travelers will go there.
But how can you make that safari experience even more magical?
If you have experienced a safari you are certain to agree that it is a magical journey of discovery into Africa’s true miracle of nature.
While all of Africa’s wildlife species have their own allure and attraction, for me it is perhaps rhino sightings that are most poignant because of the enormous threat to their existence due to the substantial amount of rhino poaching currently occurring in Southern and East Africa.
Safaris provide the ideal opportunity for tourists to meet fellow travellers. While enjoying a snack on the morning game drive, chatting over sundowners on the evening safari or around the fire after dinner, the discussion inevitably leads to travel experiences! Recently I’ve met a number of single travelers and the topic of conversation has been the added expense of single supplements.
